Too Much Holiday Heat, Head For Spain In 2007
For a long time
Spain has been a favourite for Brits looking for summer sun, desperate to avoid the bleak summers back home. However, over the past few years there has been a shift towards to the eastern Mediterranean with Greece being particularly popular. In 2007 it looks as though you might be best giving Spain another go, unless you like it really HOT! There’s hot and then there’s too hot, and this year it looks like the Med is heading for one of the hottest on record. What has been described as a “killer” heat wave caused all sorts of problems throughout June. Athens topped out at 44 degrees Celsius, making it officially the hottest June on record for them, the unbearable temperatures causing several fatalities. Crete, my personal favourite holiday spot, was also hit with blistering temperatures, responsible for the death on one person. Turkey, Italy, Romania and the Balkans have also all been hit with record temperatures. The best advice is clearly to think twice about where you go, or if you’re already booked to consider not moving around during the hottest parts of the day.
However if you do chose to avoid the heat in the eastern Med you might have other things to worry about. Spain introduces new security measures at all airports this year (2007). From now on all passengers wishing to fly will be required to fill in a passenger information form. This extra security could and most likely will cause delay issues for the expected 12.5 million heading to Spain over the summer. With all these problems and the heightened security alerts around Europe it’s no surprise that Travel Agents are reporting a drop in business this year. Remember if all else fails, there’s always Blackpool and the Isle of Man.
