A Hurricane In Hurricane Season

With Hurricane Dean now being upgraded to a level 5 Hurricane (the most severe) and winds expected to hit 145 mph many British tourists have now hit the full panic button. Those that have not already escaped the path of the hurricane are unlikely to now and must prepare to batten down that hatches until Dean blows over. In a country where a 60mph blow is considered windy this will be terrifying to most.

What is surprising though is the number of tourists who appear surprised at a Hurricane interrupting their holiday. Although still early in the Hurricane season the key there is that it is hurricane season, there are chances of a Hurricane. Hurricanes do hit every year. Do holiday companies not explain this when you’re booking or do people choose to ignore the warnings in favour of a cheaper holiday. High season for Cancun and the Caribbean is around April, there is the opportunity to take you kids then (the Easter Holidays for example) but most people seem to choose to ignore these favouring a late summer break and the risk of Hurricanes such as Dean.

Whilst tourists may well have to accept some of the blame for gambling on a cheaper holiday the hotels also need to be looking at their procedures. The locals are fully aware of what to do the British media has portrayed a picture of hotels leaving tourists to fend for themselves. Surely this can not be acceptable? With the increase in extreme weather around the globe it’s about time that hotels and resorts starting to take some responsibility for ensuring the safety of those in their care during these natural disasters.
